    A NEW MEDIUM

In this moment, we stand at the confluence of several important developments that will reshape the art and media of our century: the widening accessibility of 3D photogrammetry technologies, the art market’s shift toward blockchain-based ownership, and new advancements in 3D printing. Where these burgeoning developments meet is where a new art form is born.

The introduction of 3D photography as an artistic medium, beyond technical applications, represents a wholly new way to visualize and articulate the world—revealing substructures of reality that our eyes alone can’t perceive.

    A NEW MARKET

The advent of blockchain-based smart contracts, also known as non-fungible tokens (NFTs), has enabled the commoditization of natively digital assets and other intellectual property through trustless transference of specified ownership rights. In the case of Pallas assets, select NFTs are structured as options contracts, allowing owners to physically reproduce the 3D model in their preferred size, material, finish, etc. This represents a seismic shift in the way we manufacture art in the decentralized age.

Oracle smart contracts, which use external data to influence layers of the NFT, allow dynamic art to evolve over time. Pallas’ 3D digital assets, selectively tokenized as oracle smart contracts, are fed geolocated data on tides, sea level, weather, lunar phases, and sun and moon angle through on-demand API pulls, allowing the digital environment to evolve alongside its physical counterpart’s.

    a new manufacture

Mirroring the workflow of traditional photography, Pallas' 3D photogrammetry models are reproduced using SLA (stereolithography) 3D printing, which employs UV lasers to cure resin in the model's form. By this method, a 3D photographic print can maintain its conceptual integrity as an impression made directly from light.

In line with the concept of recreating and preserving physical monuments through 3D photographic methods, select Pallas models will be born into the physical world at life-size scale. These monolithic art pieces at once serve the purpose of spectacle and storage, freezing a moment in geological time.

    A NEW MAKER

Pallas has dedicated their life to photography, following its technical and artistic development from the medium’s origins through today. With a firm grasp of photography’s past, the artist is exploring the possibilities of its future. To illustrate the trustless nature of blockchain-based art, the artist behind Pallas wishes to remain anonymous. By reducing the artist’s role as mediator between subject and viewer, the artist assumes a quasi-anonymity, letting the subject speak for itself.

The artist hopes to inspire a new generation of 3D creators to uncover the artistic and technical capacities of 3D photography. By disclosing the physical coordinates of each subject, Pallas encourages others to visit these sites, and even to duplicate results. This open-source attitude toward artistic ownership highlights the virtue of art on-chain, allowing others to pirate the work without diluting the value of blockchain-authenticated originals. Sharing the coordinates is akin to citing a book: with photographs, we’re simply quoting reality.
